9/11 and Asbestos Exposure - First Responders

0-9
Politics & Science

The World Trade Center officially opened on April 4, 1973, after starting construction in 1966. The World Trade Center was built at a time when asbestos was widely used in the construction industry. The events of September 11, 2001 were an unspeakable act of terrorism. The aftermath is still felt today — and not only by those who lost loved ones. Thousands of first responders to the attacks are now being diagnosed with deadly forms of cancers, including mesothelioma. Many of these cancers are linked to asbestos exposure.

Addiction Counselor - Mental Health Resources for Students and Counselors

A

Mental illness covers a wide spectrum of conditions that affect children, teens, and adults. Almost one in five U.S. adults are diagnosed with a mental illness. Mental illness can be broadly separated into two categories: any mental illness and serious mental illness. Any mental illness covers all mental illnesses that have been recognized to date, whether that’s occasional depression or another behavioral, emotional, or mental condition that causes upset but can be dealt with without extreme intervention. Serious mental illness encompasses conditions that are more severe, including severe versions of things such as depression. These are behavioral, emotional, or mental conditions that cause serious functional impairment, interfering with one or more major life activities.

AddictionResource - Teen Drug and Alcohol Abuse: A Guide for Caring Parents

A

Over 138,000 teens and young adults were treated for drug and alcohol abuse at a specialized facility in 2010 according to statistics of the National Survey on Drug Use and Health. Over 1.5 million underage persons are introduced to drugs in the United States every year, which corresponds to over 4,000 new drug users per day. Costs of emergency and non-emergency medical treatment reach billions in taxpayers’ money every year. It is easy for adolescents to access many kinds of drugs, and they are more likely to become addicted than adults because their brains aren’t fully formed. Sometimes, trying a certain drug just once is enough.

The effects of a lack of sleep can be devastating on our mental health, as well as our quality of life. Buckeye Recovery - Guide to Dealing with College Anxiety

B

Does anxiety affect students? You bet it does! I couldn't believe my eyes when I read that 43% of college counselors said anxiety was the number one issue for students. Scary, isn't it? We thought so too! Think about this, 60% of college students report anxiety as the worst health problem they face. The simple truth is that too many children suffer from anxiety at school. We were convinced that there is an anxiety problem, so what could we do? That's where our guide to Dealing with Anxiety in Academics comes in. Basically, we put a ton of research and resources together into an easy to read format. Here's the point, the first step to dealing with a problem is recognizing it. The next step is finding out how to fix it. Our guide makes it easy to start dealing with the anxiety felt by our students. But the bottom line is that our guide can't help students if they can't find it.

Desert Hope - Addiction and Abuse in the LGBT Community

D

Today, there is greater awareness of gender and sexual orientation diversity than ever before in recorded history. While the LGBT community and its advocates are showing the world that one’s biological sex does not determine one’s gender identity or sexual orientation, there is still much work to be done to promote acceptance of these forms of diversity. Despite strides for greater public acceptance, marginalization of the LGBT community persist, especially for the transgender segment, and not only impacts the rate of substance abuse but may lead to a lack of research study in this area.

Drug Rehab Connections - Alcohol Self-Assessment Test

D

Even though alcohol is a legal, controlled substance, consuming too much can certainly be a bad thing. It is often hard to find the fine line between having a good time and abuse. Alcohol is usually categorized by beer, wine, or hard liquor. Since alcohol slows down mental and body processes, you may say and do things that you wouldn’t normally have done being sober.
