Frank Turner and The Sleeping Souls
Columbiahalle Berlin 11/22/18

Last year Frank Turner and The Sleeping Souls were in Berlin in January. Unfortunately I was too late, so I didn't get any more tickets. Now - my first time - I ordered in time and they played at the Columbiahalle - a home game for me.

Admission was already at 6:30pm - start at 7:30pm, so I had to take a train early from work to be there in time. But during the day I noticed that Frank Turner is supported by 2 other bands, so I didn't have to hurry.

Around 8pm I was at the Columbiahalle, where the second support band PUP played. But it was already pretty crowded there. I got myself a beer and went up to the gallery because from there you had a better view to the stage. There I got a wonderful place with a good view to the stage.

PUP played another 3 - 4 songs (at one song they had the bright white spotlights pointed directly to the gallery so you had to cover your eyes) before they left the stage at 8:30pm. After a short break for the rebuild they started on time at 9pm with Frank Turner and The Sleeping Souls.

Maceo Parker@Columbia Theater Berlin 11/17/18

In 2004 I saw Maceo Parker already once - at that time in the Traenenpalast. Now I wanted to see him again in any case - it could have been the last time.

Since the concert took place on Saturday, it was no problem that my wife would come with me, so I got 2 tickets. Admission was from 8pm - starting at 9pm. Shortly after 8:30pm we started to go towards Columbiadamm and had no problem to get in quickly. We were hardly inside the hall, just ordered a drink, when the music got louder with Prince's "1999". And a female voice - we couldn't look to the stage yet - announced Maceo and his band - but there wasn't much engagement in her voice - a bit like Christine Westermann at Zimmer Frei.

We then looked for a place where we could look to the stage - there was a lot of traffic there (near the bar), but that was justifiable.

John Butler Trio@Huxleys Neue Welt 10/21/18

11 years ago I last saw the John Butler Trio - back then in the Columbia Hall.

Since it should take place today on a Sunday, I also bought a ticket for my wife, but this time she couldn't make it, which is why my daughter came with me. Around 7:30pm we went by bicycle to Huxley's and were surprised that outside in front of the entrance there was a very long queue of people (entrance should be from 7pm). A little bit crowded in the queue, we were quickly at the entrance, where the tickets should be checked. There it was proclaimed that the drummer of JBT (Grant Gerathy) is sick, but John Butler makes a solo appearance. If you didn't want to go in, you could probably get your money back, but only a few did.

We came in quickly and got a good place on the stairs up to the gallery, where you had a good view to the stage. I got some drinks and then it started.

And once again an absolutely great evening - a fantastic concert.

Although I was almost half an hour late this time, I guess I just missed the intro the way I heard a concert goer talking next to me. Maybe Mr. Woodnote, who was a special guest this time, acted as an opener and really heated up the people.

I immediately went back to the right side, where the 2 steps to the bar are, ordered a beer quickly and looked for a good place on this surface, which I almost didn't leave until the end. After about 15 minutes I was ready for the concert and danced and danced.

This time I did not make any videos at all and only took a few photos, which were of bad quality again (so here only two).

Queen & Adam Lambert @ Mercedes Benz Arena - Berlin(DE)

Queen & Adam Lambert@Mercedes Benz Arena Berlin 06/19/18

Already at the beginning of February I had ordered my ticket via internet (119 € - a proud price). This time with a better and closer view to the stage than at The Red Hot Chilly Peppers. I took a train home early from work, made me fresh and swung on my bike - only with my ticket, money and smartphone provided. After about 1 km it occurred to me that the last time I was asked for an identity card or something similar at the Mercedes Benz Arena. Back again or further? Then I drove on. At 7:30 pm I was in front of the MBA. No extra control.

I quickly found my block in there. First a beer ordered, briefly on the terrace and shortly before 8 then to my place. In my row were only 2 seats and next to me sat a woman who I said hello. I noticed from the first words that she was Finnish. Until the beginning we talked about Finland, Finnish musicians and of course Queen. It turned out that she is a real groupie, because she also goes to 2 or 3 other Queen+AL concerts here in Europe, "actually because of Adam Lambert but Queen is of course also great".

Mr Woodnote & Andy V@Urban Spree Berlin 04/20/18

At the end of January Andy V announced via BandsinTown that he is coming to Berlin for a single show in April. The next day I saw that also Mr. Woodnote is playing on the same day and the same show. Wow - two of my favorite artists I would like to see - together at one show.

After a hard working day with a short stop at home to freshen up and leave all unnecessary things at home, I reached Revalerstraße around 9:00 pm by bike - a beautiful sunny day - T-shirt weather - many partygoers. For me it was the first time on the RAW grounds where the Urban Spree is located.

Ashton Lane @ Resort Mark Brandenburg - Neuruppin(DE)

Ashton Lane@Resort Mark Brandenburg Neuruppin 04/14/18

About 2 months ago Ashton Lane announced a German tour with concerts in Neuruppin and Berlin. Hooray was my reaction. The concert in Neuruppin was scheduled for April 14th at the Resort Mark Brandenburg - a wonderful opportunity to get out of Berlin with my wife and spend the weekend in Neuruppin. Hotel Resort was too expensive for us, which is why we rented a room in a small pension a few meters away from the hotel.

With Caddy and our bikes on the big loading area we left Berlin around 14:00 o’clock. On the way there it was still raining heavily, but when we arrived at Neuruppin, the sun was already shining, so that immediately after we had moved into our room, we took our bikes for a short lap in and around the city to eat something tasty.

After a short break in our rooms we went over to the Resort around 8:45 pm and settled down in the hotel lobby in the first row of comfortable armchairs, where the concert should take place. When we got there, there might have been 10-15 people in the lobby. Later on and towards the end there were many more spectators (maybe 50?).

Graeme Duffin - guitar player / backing vocal and well known as a Wet Wet Wet member - was already in the lobby near the merchandise area. Tim O’Connor - guitar player and vocals - joined a few minutes later and shortly after 9:00 pm the concert started after Esther O’Connor also came on stage.

At the beginning Esther introduced the band as a family band from Scotland. Graeme - her father on the left side of the small stage and Tim - her husband - on her right side. The mother was babysitting their two children, but was introduced as the tour manager. Graeme partly translated into German because he had learned this at school and it still went quite well over his lips. Only Neuruppin was difficult for everyone on stage to pronounce.

Then the first song "Up My Street" started. The acoustics in the lobby were excellent, so I recorded the first three songs with my smartphone, after that the memory was unfortunately full. Between the songs they interspersed short stories, which were partly translated by Graeme. I immediately recognized some of the songs they played, such as "Looking out for Number 1", "One kiss later", "Seventeen", "Legacy" or "Need you now", others I may have heard or were new.

All in all they played for about 1:30 hours. Afterwards they were available for questions and selfies or signed CDs that someone bought. I went there and bought an Ashton Lane T-Shirt, which fit me very well. Afterwards I took a selfie with Esther and Tim and we talked for a while before we left the Hotel. Promising also to come to the Berlin-gig Tim told me it was cancelled but they will still be going to Berlin for some more relaxing days.

Around 11:30 pm we were back in our accommodation, where we fell asleep quite quickly - happy to have experienced this great evening in Neuruppin with Ashton Lane.

Notice: In the German-discurs by Graeme he gave to note he was learning useful and not so useful words in German. Useful for example was "Kugelschreiber" and not useful "Selbstbedienungsladen".

Joseph Bowie & DEFUNKT @ Quasimodo - Berlin(DE)

Joseph Bowie & DEFUNKT@Quasimodo Berlin 01/05/18

Today was a historic day for Joseph Bowie & DEFUNKT: 40 years of stage presence. So it should be a special concert and YES it was.

It was also special because this time not only my wife and I were there, but also Ville & Devi (Tickets were a birthday present for Ville), Bengi, Anja and Kalle - my wife's cousin - and his wife. At the last concert here (Uli Jon Roth) there wasn't much going on at 9:30pm and we had the super-stay at the back near the mixer again. Three steps higher than the rest - super-view. That was the goal again this time. Since Defunkt is always full, I was there at 9pm this time (Anja also), but unfortunately the good places were already occupied. Nevertheless, we have established ourselves there. Ville & Devi arrived at 9:30pm and my wife arrived shortly afterwards. Only Kalle & Frau arrived shortly before the start. Two of us could be right at the front of the mixer. The rest was spread out behind it.
