Part IV: Another Dead Battery
11/21/09

“One Dead Battery”

One dead battery, another dead body
No more pain, a future now plotted
Evenly entombed- a tour through; phrases
Dealt carefully attempting to explain this
Every last dead battery is one more too many
A piece of peace drained; a loss for our country
‘Duty calls,’ they said, and our soldiers answered
But the headlines i see keep seeing them interred
Another homage to our fallen heroes
Trying so bravely to land ordered blows
Torn from home, torn into two by the fighting
Each, if questioned, will say it’s quite ‘exciting’
Ready for combat until they see it first-hand
Yearning for action until their unit loses a man.

“A Metallic Misery”

Armed but unarmored; a military arrogantly ‘advanced’
Metallic misery loaded with loathing into all barrels
Every shot ‘high tech’- eerie, vision even in the night
Toggled on, tiptoeing- a greenish glow illuminating
Apparently empty desert; on guard, gauging; gazing
Looking around tentatively; tensely marching on- breaking
Leaning on rifles at rest- re-assured,
Import inflated intensely by ghoulish gadgetry
Catching their breath- silently, quickly- listening intently
Moving forward- objective straight ahead; oblivious to the obvious
Incoming! mortars mangle, mopping up men in the night
Some scene- serious carnage, careless orders; commanders
Earnestly ordering children after children- chilling
Reinforcing a reminiscence of less recent invasions
Young, used- on all sides; following blind orders from far outside

“Strategically Speaking, Softly”

Silently now i start to spell it out
Typing it up neatly in black and white
Repeating myself only when in doubt
A whole-hearted effort to get it write
To make it public and finally end this
Employed by love, a worker unpaid
Gaining ground, gripping pen; making a list
Inspecting within and without- eyes open; enraged
Callously they make waste of our youth
Afghanistan’s, Pakistan’s & Iraq’s, too.. strange
Let them, why don’t you, tear the world into two
Leaving messes behind, targets engaged ‘at range’?
You stand so far back from it you can’t even see
Shooting missiles from drones, missing the enemy
Point and click or circle and level- which strategy?
Every time a stray shot- drones low on energy?
A dead battery to contend with? a targeting malfunction?
Killing their civilians, failing to protect your own
In the field- serving valiantly- suffering command, dysfunction
Never opening your eyes to the terrorism you’ve sown
Granting them publicity, giving them cause- moronic
Such a grand war with a strikingly brilliant approach
Oh, give them a rest- just finish your gin & tonic
Forgetting everything about it or just never in touch?
Turning the glass up or these your sober decisions?
Listlessly galvanizing a world with ever deeper incisions-
Your strategy is in need of some major revisions!

Thanks for sharing your words.

I think U.S. and other foreign forces should get out of Afghanistan, looks as if the U.S. will escalate instead, how predictable. I wonder if President Obama is going to do this to prove his manhood, or masculinity, seems like it. I don't think it will stop terror, probably fuel it, as you have suggested. That is conventional wisdom at this point. Why do politicians want to fight?

i don't really think politicians want to fight, except to the extent that they are funded by interests that do. the job of a politician is to get along with everyone, but when the two extremes of 'right' and 'left' are in charge of the conversation, we come out with the current- DIVISIVE- two-party system we have today. as if there were only two ways to look at this issue... or any other, for that matter. the fact remains that we are already there and must find a way to exit gracefully- one way or another. hopefully violence will be less emphasised in the 'new' strategy and other issues like infrastructure, education and governance will be addressed.

Hi gcool06, Spearits:

Well, two parties are better than one. . .some would say that the two major political parties in U.S. are one big party, I don't buy that, Republicans really do have different opinions and attitudes from Democrats. For instance, there are many people in the Republican Party who think Sarah Palin, former V.P. candidate, is a great leader and should even be President. Well, to me she is someone who has no place in politics at all and maybe if she makes enough money on her book she will stay out and just do Facebook. . .

I do think President Obama has good intentions for Afghanistan, just doesn't know how to end it, and maybe he thinks something good will come out of escalating the war. . .

and also... that Obama's goal is not to 'escalate the war' but to provide enough troops to provide stability in the country. i believe his intentions are good given the current situation, but i think it's always difficult- in life and politics- to turn it around when you've made a huge mistake (or didn't think something all the way through...). i guess we have to wait until Tuesday, right? that's when he's revealing his 'new' strategy and pinpointing the number of troops he plans to send.

as far as being critical of OUR two-party system, i just meant that often-times incredibly important and complex issues / legislation get boiled down to a single pivot-point issue which is not (or only barely) relevant to the actual issue. thus torpedoing any real effort to solve the problem with a debate that only distracts.

and i agree with you about Palin, too. let's hope she stays out of politics (though if she doesn't, i'm sure the show will be as amusing as the last one...).

Hey,

True, the form of government we have is awkward and it does take a lot to solve problems in this form of government, then throw in the lobbyists and it gets mucky!

Sarah Palin is good comic relief, since she quit her office as Governor of Alaska, I don't think she has a real chance at winning any high office, but then I've been wrong before. . .
