The Trusted - Spin (self-released)

Indie, as a musical tag, has been with us a long time now. And, like any established genre, bands wandering its realm need to find new paths to explore, new sonic fields to plow, and ways to make their music not merely sound like what has gone before.

So, whilst Southend’s The Trusted are clearly standing on the shoulders of some indie giants, not least Arctic Monkeys, it is what they garner from outside the genre, the less expected moves and grooves they weave through, that help them build a signature sound and identity.

Driven by a cleaned up Clash energy, albeit a more poised and polished one, no small amount of pop accessibility, and the lyrical smarts of early ElvisCostello, that is… “Spin” is the sound of indie +, indie 2.0, indie bursting with a new lease of life.

Lyrically, it’s an appeal to find a real place amid the fakery of the modern world, a plea for authenticity, a connection to the human condition as we drown in the artifice we, as a culture, have ushered in. A pertinent and poignant point.

Okay, it may be my job as a journo and scribe to dissect and dwell on what a song is all about, but the bottom line is this. “Spin” is simply a brilliant song, infectious, energized to the point of euphoria, full of life, and indeed, life-affirming. And that, at the end of the day, is all that really matters. dontcha think?
