On Repeat: Sarah Jaffe Gets Animated w/ The Generationals in New 'Tryin' To Reach Ya' Video

There are no small number of things that keep us enamored of Sarah Jaffe, one of them being her ability to bring exactly the right collaborators into her musical world to assist in conveying her inimitable visual vision. To wit, the striking 2019 Dani Okon directed video for 'Lay Low (Take Care)'.

But as a kind of homage to her unique way of interpreting the universe, New Orleans indie duo Generationals enlisted both Jaffe (on vocals) and Okon to collab on an utterly fantastical animated video for their new single 'Tryin' to Reach Ya.' Musically, it comes off a bit like The Knife and Peter Gabriel teaming up to do afro-R&B - so a good thing, obviously. The lyrics appear to be about how finding one's true identity can sometimes be accomplished via the love of another person who refuses to give up on us.

"Feel like a stranger to myself
I know it's hard to be around
Don't know what I was thinking
But you're the only one
Who could hold it down"

"When Generationals reached out about collaborating I was thrilled for the opportunity," Jaffe enthuses. "The majority of my time in 2019 and 2020 was spent exploring and sharpening the production side of making music. So I was so excited to put some of the sounds to the test. I'm so proud of the song that we made, and I know we got more bops to come."

Okon's visuals actually give the song a whole new dimension, as she conjures a kind of exuberant Peter Max / George Dunning psychedelic fantasy that yet seems perfectly suited to the look of this, the 21st Century. And honestly, we just cannot stop watching it.

For Jaffe's part, she's been keeping particularly busy, with recent gigs in DC, Philly and New York, and new EP The Championship, featuring the title track and the utterly infectious synth pop of 'Frances Mcdormand, Catherine O'Hara'. It's one of the most immediate songs she's ever done - but one which almost never came to be.

"A lot of times when I finish writing one thing," she explains, "it gives me the gas to finish writing another. So after Championship' I finished writing 'Frances McDormand, Catherine O'Hara', which had been sitting in a folder on my laptop, unfinished, for well over a year."

We're certainly thrilled she finally got around to it.
