Renowned guitarist Jean-Paul Bourelly and Sacramento's Exploring Miles will perform music in the style of 1970s-era electric Miles Davison on Sunday, Nov. 24, at The Palms Playhouse, 13 Main St. in Winters. The show, which is part of the venue's Sunday Afternoon Jazz series, will start at 3 p.m.

Tickets are $22 in advance, $26 at the door and $12 with student ID.

Bourelly knows Davis' music from the inside. He played on one of Davis' last records, "Amandla." He also tours with Miles Electric Band.

An innovative and experimental guitarist and composer, Bourelly excels at blending and bending various musical styles into cohesive expression.

His music is informed by the migrant community of Haiti and the culture of Chicago's South Side, where he grew up.

Bourelly moved from Chicago to New York to pursue music when he was still a teenager. Once in New York, he became a prominent member of the M-Base Collective with Steve Coleman, Cassandra Wilson and others during the 1980s and early 1990s.

In addition to extensive work as a sideman, Bourelly has released about 15 records as a bandleader. Acclaimed albums include "Jungle Cowboy" and "Trippin'" on the JMT and ENEMY labels.

Bourelly actively tours the world with groups featuring a who's who of jazz and funk greats, including Darryl Jones (longtime bassist with the Rolling Stones and also with Miles Davis, Sting and Peter Gabriel), drummer Will Calhoun (Living Colour and B.B. King) and Cindy Blackman (Santana and Lenny Kravitz)

His current groups include Stone Raiders with Jones and Calhoun, Kiss The Sky and more.

Bourelly also is a lecturer in music at UC Davis.

Exploring Miles! is an ongoing project by multi-instrumentalist Tony Passarell to capture "the vibe" of Miles Davis' electric period from 1970 to the mid-1980s. Mixing and matching celebrated musicians from Sacramento and the Bay Area, Passarell is excited to join forces with Bourelly and a hand-picked crew for this unique performance.

In addition to Passarell on cornet, soprano sax and percussion, Exploring Miles! is Dave Thomas (electric guitar), Alan Ernst (keyboards), William S. Jones (bass) and Jenn Schaaf (drums).

Tickets are available at Armadillo Music in Davis, Pacific Ace Hardware in Winters, Davids' Broken Note in Woodland, online via The Palms' website and Eventbrite and at the door if not sold out.
