by April Neale

Peter Gabriel, Steve Hackett, Michael Rutherford, Phil Collins and Tony Banks

Invisible Touch, Throwing It All Away, Against All Odds, In the Air Tonight, Sledgehammer, I Can’t Dance, In Your Eyes…just a few of the songs that defined a generation from an iconic band and its individual members who have defied genre over their nearly five-decade run, both together and apart.

TV Picks: "Genesis – Sum of the Parts" is a no-miss 90-minute feature-length documentary premiering Friday, October 10th at 8 p.m. (ET/PT) on SHOWTIME, and reunites the multi-Platinum-selling, Grammy®-winning, Rock and Roll Hall of Fame-inducted band to tell personal accounts of their rise to fame and fortune, first with Peter Gabriel and later Phil Collins as lead vocalists, and through their respective solo careers.

Genesis: Sum of the Parts takes us from the first beginnings of this band of songwriters in the late 1960s to its final incarnation as a rock giant in the 1990s – via full-blown theatrical progressive rock in the mid-1970s and the stadium pop of the 1980s – Genesis could perplex and enrage the die-hards, whilst exciting and exhilarating newer disciples.

Made with the full co-operation of the band, Genesis: Sum of the Parts tells the story of one of the most successful British bands in rock history reuniting Tony Banks, Phil Collins, Peter Gabriel, Steve Hackett and Mike Rutherford for the first time since 1975, to tell their story.

Hear core band members Tony Banks, Phil Collins, Peter Gabriel, Steve Hackett and Mike Rutherford discussing the backstories of their creating more than 15 albums (selling some 130 million worldwide) – from their beginnings as songwriters in the late 1960s to their full-blown, stadium-sell-out, MTV-fueled success of the ‘70s and ‘80s to their final incarnation as prog-rock giants in the ‘90s.

Throughout various band member departures and returns, Genesis never ceased to both thrill and confuse their die-hard fans while attracting new disciples with their ever-evolving, dynamic, pop-rock music style. The documentary seeks to indoctrinate the next generation of Genesis fans and remind young and old alike of their legacy and long-standing influence.

The film recounts an extraordinary musical story, exploring the band’s songwriting as well as emotional highs and lows, alongside previously unseen archive material and rare performance footage from across their entire career.
