Dub FX @PerleBam - 05/30/26

Already in April I knew that Dub FX was coming to Perleberg this weekend. The 5th PerleBÄM Festival was taking place this weekend, with lots of street performers around the church square. Dub FX was also due to hold a 30-minute workshop and perform later that evening at the KulturKombinat. And Perleberg seems to be a lovely little town, so I asked my wife if we wanted to go to Perleberg for the weekend. No sooner said than done (accommodation and train tickets were booked).

We arrived in Perleberg at around 4 pm and reached our accommodation (right in the town centre) about half an hour later. After a short break, we went into town to check out the street festival (jugglers, magicians, DJs, bands), had a bite to eat, and then headed to Stage 2, where Dub FX was already setting up his equipment.

It seems Dub FX had used this weekend as a mini-break combined with a gig, as his wife/girlfriend – Sahida Apsara – and their two children were there too.

Several benches had been set up around the performance area, where quite a few people had already taken a seat – many children were also taking a break there.

OK, so he started by introducing himself and talking about what he's been doing for over 20 years as a street performer with his looping station. First, he plays a beat and saves it, then adds a suitable bass line and background sounds – high or low – all using his voice and the looping station. He explained and demonstrated the whole process using his most famous song, 'Love Someone'.

Slowly but surely, more and more people started gathering in the square and we just soaked up the lovely atmosphere. During the second song ('Flow'), Sahida joined in, dancing and singing. They played two more songs (possibly 'Sooth Your Pain') and then it was all over. Lots of people went over to them afterwards to buy records or other merchandise.

We then strolled around town for a bit to see where the Kulturkombinat was and how buying tickets worked. Then we went back to the hotel, where we had a meal in the restaurant before heading off to the actual gig. During dinner, my wife realized her headache wasn't going to get any better, so I went to the Kulturkombinat on my own shortly after 9 p.m.

When I arrived at the Kombinat, there was no line and everything was pretty laid-back. I treated myself to a gin and tonic to start things off and sat down in the garden, where a few other people were already sitting. Just before the concert started, a couple from Wittenberge sat down next to me to grab a bite to eat (there was a stand with delicious food right next to us). We had a nice chat before the show began.

The courtyard and garage were slowly filling up, which was a good sign that things were about to get started. So I went into the barn and picked out a good spot. The DJ there was already playing some great music, and people were already dancing - some of them already pretty drunk.

Then Dub FX started up with 'Up', and I started dancing right away. The only bummer was that the drunk "locals" were getting on my nerves, so I found a better spot a little further away from them and was able to dance through until the end.

For a few songs - unfortunately, I don't remember the titles anymore - Sahida also came on stage, and they played together until the end. While they were packing up their equipment, the DJ was already getting the crowd pumped up with drum & bass and dancehall. I went outside, and there I chatted briefly with the couple from Wittenberge - nice people.

I had another cold drink, and cooled off a bit before heading back to the hotel around midnight.
